Sea Buckthorn

Hippophae Rhamnoides

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is rich in vitamins (A, C, E, K, riboflavin, folic acid), carotenoids (carotene, lycopene), flavonoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols (ergosterol, stigmasterol, lansterol, amyrins), organic acids (malic acid, oxalic acid), some amino acids, and minerals. It has a rich history of use in treating numerous medical conditions, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine since ancient times.

In Greece, SBT leaves and twigs were fed to horses which resulted in weight gain and a shining coat. The SBT leaf extract was found to have significant anti-inflammatory activity in adjuvant induced arthritis (AIA) rat model and lipopolysaccharide induced inflammatory response in murine macrophages.
