Calcium

Calcium (Ca) is an essential mineral. The main function of calcium is its well-known role in constructing and renewing the skeleton. Calcium also takes part in muscle and cardiac contraction, blood clotting, cellular exchanges, membrane permeability, hormone release and transmission of the nerve impulse.

Calcium absorption is influenced by many factors. The amount of calcium absorbed is affected by the chemical form and source of the calcium, the interrelationships with other nutrients, presence of oxalates, and the horse’s requirement.
