Toxic Trees That Shouldn't be in Horse Pastures

October 25, 2021

There are a number of different tree species which are capable of causing mild to severe poisoning of horses. Cases of poisonings that have occurred are often related to turning horses out in pastures containing little to no grass cover, or are associated with a specific event such as a recent storm with strong winds that knocks down tree branches and increases the likelihood that horses may intentionally or accidentally ingest leaves, seeds, or fruits from the tree. Sometimes trees are only toxic during certain times of the year, stage of growth of the tree, or are associated with specific tree parts.
