Hernia

A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or part of an organ through the wall of the cavity normally containing it. Hernias can be internal (occurs within the abdominal cavity) or external (occurs through the body wall producing a visible and palpable swelling covered by skin), direct (occurs through a rent or tear) or indirect (occurs through a natural passage).
